  • Christmas In A Country Town 80 Years Ago

The Christmas countdown is on! And the excitement in all those small country towns around the world is building as rural meets urban in the holiday preparations. Here’s what Christmas was like in a snowy, small country Canadian town 80 years ago, as remembered by my father, Clare Westcott.

Picture this: I was seven years old. It was 1931.

  • Sacred Cow Not So Sacred?

I have watched with some interest and a heavy degree of cynicism as the madness over milk pricing plays out. Why such credibility is given to dairy companies that compete directly with Fonterra remains a mystery to me. It seems so obvious that they will cry foul and want the price of raw milk dropped so they can pay less for their milk supply and make more money for their shareholders - the majority of whom are foreign investors.

  • Glenys' Blog - Southland Snow Storms Sympathy

Just when farmers in the South Island thought it couldn't get any worse, it did. The heavy dump of snow in Southland has meant the heartache of lamb losses, spilt milk and rebuilding on-farm that will stretch well out into the future.

Farmers knew of the bad weather approaching - they were served very well by NIWA, weather forecasters and media reports but nothing preared them for what they now have to cope with.

For both sheep and dairy farmers, this weather event has come at a time when it can do the most damage to fragile financial situations.

With prospects for both lamb and dairy products looking brighter than for some time, there were many who had hoped this season's earnings would put them back into a much better financial spot.

Now their accountants will be preparing to give them the bad news as earnings drop but all the essential maintenance of infrastructure on the farm has to go on.

The GST rise from October 1 won't help, either.

It's a timely reminder that while New Zealand has a great grass-growing climate, the country's maritime nature means storms such as this can do a great amount of damage to livestock and property in a very short space of time.

As with the earthquake in Christchurch, perhaps the most important thing to focus on is the miracle that there was no loss of human life.

And for that all New Zealanders need to be profoundly grateful.

  • Weather Update with Philip Duncan

It's been with us since last Friday and as we head into Tuesday, more severe

weather is expected across a number of regions.

The government forecaster, MetService, is predicting a risk of more severe

gales and heavy snow in both islands.

As the deep low from the weekend begins to move away, other lows that

normally circle around Antarctica are fuelling the windy, cold, weather over

the lower South Island and driving strong to gale force winds over central

regions of the country, roughly from Canterbury to Taranaki.

More snow is also expected around Southland and Otago and possibly the

    Desert Road.

But there is some good news - the severe weather is increasingly becoming

confined to places where it's more normal.

At this time of the year, it's not uncommon to see winds gusting to 130km/h

at Castlepoint in Taranaki or winds on the Hauraki Gulf sustained at gale

force.  Over the next few days, we will see the severe weather becoming

confined to places where it's more normal and less severe weather in our

    main centres.

Even the snow flurries and sleet in Southland should be more at a 'normal'

level for September over the next couple of days.

And while more weather warnings are likely, the worst of this severe weather

event is behind us.  The worst was certainly on Friday and Saturday so we

will gradually see things calming down over the rest of the working week.

That shouldn't detract from any warnings or watches though - they should

still be taken seriously if you live in an affected region, especially

in Southland as snow events can change very quickly.

  • Weather Update with Philip Duncan

Southland farmers - hang in there for just a couple more days!

Despite more freezing winds and snow on the way, I can definitely now see light at the end of the tunnel with slightly warmer weather this weekend and sunny, warm, weather hopefully returning next week.

Farmers in Southland have had an incredibly rough week with their stock losses vastly unreported says Federated Farmers. Latest estimates put the figure as high as one million dead lambs.

While snow is again likely to fall to low levels tonight and tomorrow, it's the wind chill that is more of a concern.

I think wind chills will be as low as -5 across the lower levels of Southland and as cold as -10 on the more exposed high country farms.  As you know, it's these brutal winds that are so deadly to newborn lambs.

However conditions should start to improve, temperature wise, during the weekend with winds dying out and sunnier weather returning by the start of next week.

Highs into the teens are possible in Invercargill over the weekend - a big jump from 4s and 5s and other single digit highs from the past few days.

All the best - and if you have ANY weather questions or concerns, please do email me directly - weather@country99tv.co.nz

  • Mark's Blog - Snow, Snow, Go Away

It’ll be known as the great snow of 2010 for years to come.  It will go down in local folklore as a “Where were you when the snow struck?” moment.

And for farmers, it couldn’t have come at a worse time with many right in the middle of lambing.

The loss of hundreds of thousands  – possibly even a million - lambs comes at a time when the demand for their meat is increasing on the world stage.  And it comes as the number of lambs on-farm is decreasing with the number of dairy conversions in recent years.

One estimate puts the destruction at one million lambs dead!   Now that is a huge blow to the economy of Southland, if you think that in a matter of months those lambs would be fetching $90 - $130.   So that’s roughly a hundred million dollars or more out of the community because of one foul snow fall.

Seeing the piles of dead slinks being collected on the news is certainly distressing and must have raised many questions from urban youngsters seeing it on the news.

Then there was the loss to the community of the Southland Stadium.

A couple of years ago, we produced the National Bank Young Farmer Contest out of Stadium Southland in Invercargill.  It was July and was pretty chilly weather for the contestants working away outside on their various challenges as a cold blast came off the Antarctic.

When it came to the Grand Final broadcast, we felt so relieved to have the Stadium there, especially as the rain was bucketing down.  Perhaps we might have been a little more circumspect if we’d known how flimsy the structure apparently was.

Having said that, it was a magnificent facility and a real community hub.   There was a constant stream of sporty people of all ages coming and going and getting the most out of the stadium. Apparently, it attracted 10,000 people every week.

It is a tragedy for a community to lose something as pivotal as the stadium.   Not only do they forfeit the facility, locals lose the ability to host great community events.  The stadium has been the venue for International Netball, Davis Cup Tennis, concerts, boat shows and equestrian events plus the home of rock climbing, indoor soccer, squash and volleyball.

It is a bloody shame.   But like the Cantabrians, the Southlanders are built tough and they will simply overcome it for the love of their province.

As a footnote, we did get snow on one Young Farmer Grand Final.

No, it wasn’t in Southland, Otago or Canterbury.

Instead, it happened in temperate Hawke’s Bay.  The biggest snow fall in years cut all roads in and out of the Bay and extinguished power right in the middle of our broadcast.

    Thank God for generators.

  • Weather Update with Philip Duncan

There is good news from MetService Thursday afternoon - despite the risk of more severe weather warnings being issued over the next day or two, the severe weather is shifting further south.   That means the violent weather of the past week is sinking back into the Southern Ocean and away from New Zealand.

Obviously the South Island will see the rough weather lingering a little longer than their North Island farming neighbours but either way it's a positive sign of change.

Also, conditions will start to warm up everywhere - that's right, EVERYwhere over the next two days.  Already in the North Island the winds have started to ease back a bit in northern areas.  It's still windy as all get out for many of us but compared to previous days, it's not as bad.

The spring equinox officially kicked in at 3:07pm on Thursday - which is the green light for summer to roll on in...albeit slowly.

During this transition time from winter into summer we can expect more stormy weather, but the hope is this storm was a one-off freak event - and will not be repeated this year.  Certainly we can all agree on that being an ideal forecast.

The long range forecast for the next week or so shows more nor'westers and higher air pressure.  The higher air pressure will put a stop to those damaging squalls and will also help protect us from the stormy roaring 40s that cross the Southern Ocean.

Like I said there are more warnings likely to be issued, but as I said the other night on TV, it's likely the gales will only brush the Southland coast

    - the worst, I believe, is now behind us.

  • Weather Update with Philip Duncan

It's one of the most frequent questions I'm being asked at the moment - what is the weather going to be like this weekend?

Well, the good news first - the worst now appears to be behind us.

The effects from the roaring 40s being pulled up over the nation this week
will still take a few more days to ease - but it will be those in the north
that feel the winds drop back and see the showers ease first of all.

    Lighter Winds:
The strong winds will ease from Taranaki/Central Plateau/Gisborne northwards.
That means places like Auckland, Whangarei, Hamilton, Tauranga, Taupo, New
Plymouth and Gisborne should have a far calmer weekend than last weekend - and
from the week that's just been.

    Strong Winds:
All regions south of Taranaki/Central Plateau and Gisborne will continue to
see strong, gusty winds. However, as the weekend continues, those strong winds
should become more confined to the ranges and those in the deep south.

    Cold Weather:
This is the good news - everywhere is looking much warmer this weekend.
This is especially important for those in Southland.  Daytime highs will jump
from the low single digits through much of this week into the low, possibly
mid, teens across Southland and Otago.

    Rain:
Rain or showers will affect a number of regions in the west.  Heavy rain is
expected along the West Coast (MetService says warnings may be issued).
Showers are likely around Southland, Kapiti, Horowhenua, Manawatu and
    Taranaki.

There may be other regions in the north and west that will see a few light
showers on Saturday but again, after the weather that's been around this week,
it will be a big improvement.

Make sure you stay up to date with the MetService warnings and watches - there
    are a few still active.

But I am pleased to say that the worst is now behind us.

  • Money Talks Episode 12

What a week! Massive protests at the G8 and G20 Summits in Toronto as world leaders battled to come up with clever plans to box on through the global uncertainty. It’s unlikely the top dogs would have witnessed first-hand the protestors’ rioting, police car burning and shop front smash-ups apart from their cloistered view of their TV screens , securely locked away as they were, far from the madding crowd.

Toronto's my hometown - I visit at least once a year to get my mandatory hit of family, friends, maple syrup, Mounties and that good old Canadian hospitality. I adore my native land.

As a kid growing up in Toronto, every weekend would see thousands of Americans pouring across the US-Canada border from urban warfare cities like Buffalo and Detroit to savour the safety and civility of Canadian towns. They called it "Toronto The Good."

My dad, during his term as Chairman of the Toronto Police Commission which represented 7,000 proud police officers, once told me the story of Toronto hosting the International Chiefs of Police Convention. 12,000 police chiefs from around the world congregated.  My dad recounted how the then head of the FBI regaled him with tales of how he and his wife would set their alarm clock for midnight, get up and walk the streets until 4 a.m...just because they could! No muggings, no murder, no mayhem. Magic. Mmmmmm.....

And on another occasion, as my father strolled out of his office with the German Chancellor beside him, the politician turned to him and said, "You know, Mr. Westcott, it's the first time in 15 years I haven't had to have a security guard next to me." He delighted in his new-found freedom.

    That was then...

“Money Talks” guest Bernard Hickey of interest.co.nz explored the battle going on behind the G20 boardroom doors as the USA’s President Obama  pushed for continued stimulus, warning American consumers weren’t ready to go it alone, while European leaders like Britain’s Prime Minister David Cameron pushed for a “slash and burn” approach, carving a whopping 25% of the UK’s state sector spending in a tough new budget.

And there’s talk now the banking reforms will be delayed until 2012 and that could see banking capital dry up globally. That’ll be bad news for farmers in the long term – kiss that cheap, easy money from the banks goodbye!

Bernard Hickey’s advice? Farmers need to watch out for a restriction on credit over the next 2 years.

ASB Rural Economist James Shortall pointed out despite the instability in world markets, dairy prices continue to lead growth here in New Zealand, and they’ve been stable for the past 6 weeks. Great news! However, he’s picking that while whole milk powder prices will remain strong, they’re unlikely to hit the record 2008 levels.

But U.S. beef prices are struggling, he says, and have been that way for the past couple of months because American chickens – banned from Russia – have flooded American ovens and barbeques – with probably no end in sight for the next couple of months.

As for South Canterbury Finance? Bernard Hickey argues it’s time for the government to wind it up. He says it’s taxpayers’ money shoring the troubled company up through the guaranteed government loan scheme – and he figures the risks now are just too high.

What do you think? Drop me a line!
