Weather Update with Philip Duncan

Southland farmers - hang in there for just a couple more days!

Despite more freezing winds and snow on the way, I can definitely now see light at the end of the tunnel with slightly warmer weather this weekend and sunny, warm, weather hopefully returning next week.

Farmers in Southland have had an incredibly rough week with their stock losses vastly unreported says Federated Farmers. Latest estimates put the figure as high as one million dead lambs.

While snow is again likely to fall to low levels tonight and tomorrow, it's the wind chill that is more of a concern.

I think wind chills will be as low as -5 across the lower levels of Southland and as cold as -10 on the more exposed high country farms.  As you know, it's these brutal winds that are so deadly to newborn lambs.

However conditions should start to improve, temperature wise, during the weekend with winds dying out and sunnier weather returning by the start of next week.

Highs into the teens are possible in Invercargill over the weekend - a big jump from 4s and 5s and other single digit highs from the past few days.

All the best - and if you have ANY weather questions or concerns, please do email me directly - weather@country99tv.co.nz
