Money Talks Episode 11

The latest edition of the Money Talks discussion programme, hosted by veteran journalist John Stewart on Country 99 TV, has gone to air with some lively discussion on the future of Timaru financier Alan Hubbard.

Guests on the programme were regular fixture, ASB rural economist James Shortall, and financial adviser Jeff Matthews of Spicers.

Alan Hubbard’s Aorangi Securities, seven associated charities and the company founder and his wife have been placed in statutory management and the Serious Fraud Office is investigating.

Jeff Spicer said on the programme that he thought related lending by Mr Hubbard’s entities will probably be one of the main issues investigated.

James gave a positive outlook for New Zealand’s commodity exports at present, pointing out that currencies such as the pound and euro are under pressure because of the turmoil in Europe. That means the Kiwi dollar is stronger against those currencies.

James pointed out that timber exports and prices are doing very well at present, thanks largely to very strong demand from China.

The panel gave MAF’s latest annual Situation and Outlook report a good going-over, with James pointing out that, while dairying is in very good health, MAF’s prediction of a 14% lift for dairy production may be a little optimistic.

Money Talks with John Stewart has its first airing at 8.30 pm Thursday night with numerous repeats.
