Seven of the country’s top emerging farmers battled it out for four days in Dunedin last week for the National Bank 2012 Young Farmer of the Year title.
As well as being tested on everyday practical farming skills, such as shearing and milking, the contestants also had their business management skills and general knowledge thoroughly assessed.
But in the end it was Michael Lilley a 26-year-old vet from Murchison who took out the top honours. Mr Lilley attributed his success to being a finalist in the competition previously.
