A leading New Zealand Scientists has told world freshwater experts that the country's waterways are generally in better condition than those overseas, but we do have a recognised pollution problem, and we need to solve it.
NIWA Chief Scientist for Freshwater, Dr Clive Howard-Williams was addressing delegates at the start of the 15th International Water
Association’s annual DIPCON conference tacking place in Rotorua this week.
DIPCON stands for Diffuse Pollution Specialist Conference, and draws together scientists, engineers, economists and resource managers from 28 countries to share and discuss the latest developments in diffuse water pollution management.
Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment Dr Jan Wright told the conference that different environmental issues capture the public and media attention at different times.
Dr Wright said ‘now its water quality’s time. Water quality has become a major issue in New Zealand in Recent years’.
