"Its one call I sincerely hoped I’d never have to make again." Those words from John Hartnell, Federated Farmers Earthquake Spokesperson, speaking after Christchurch was rocked by two major earthquakes yesterday afternoon, which once again brought chaos to the crippled city.
46 people needed hospital treatment, thousands have been left without electricity, water or sewage facilities, and the city came to a virtual standstill as neighbourhoods and roads succumbed to rockfalls and liquefaction.
The earthquakes, one of which was felt as far away as Dunedin, and their aftershocks, were centred around Banks Peninsula and the Eastern Suburbs.
Federated Farmers closed its Christchurch office and sent the staff home.
John Hartnell says the organisation had sent texts to as many farmers as they could, and though some of the farmers were shaken up, no major problems had been reported.
Some Farms on Banks peninsula had suffered from falling boulders and debris, damaging roads and fences.
“The areas that we have had most of our reports from are coming from Banks peninsula; and the majority has to do with rock fall; and the big boulders that come down in the shakes; and they take out fences and some of the internal roads for farmers.”
John Hartnell told Country99TV some farmers on town water supply were worried about their animals.
“One of our main concerns at this stage is the stock water out on Godley Head, last time there were issues there because they are on town supply; and ofcourse that whole area was knocked out last night for water.
“Unless they get that hooked up in the next 24 hours or so I guess we will have to look at seeing what we can help that particular farmer get water back onto his farm.”
