McVean Set For Another Tilt At London Olympics

The 2012 London Olympics are back on for New Zealand’s equestrian golden girl Katie McVean.

Katie will be returning to Europe mid June to ride top Dutch horse Wavantos VD Renvillehoeve, an eight-year-old who has already qualified for the London Olympics with his previous rider.Katie McVean 2

“Yeah I'd heard it about it awhile ago, but it was under contract to the Polish federation with another rider and they've just got it out of the contract.

“They actually came to me at the first show in Europe I did, so that was quite exciting.”

The 24-year-old, who sold Olympic hope Dunstan Delphi for an undisclosed multi-million dollar sum to the Saudi Arabians earlier this month, says she is excited to be in for a chance at the 2012 games, but doesn’t believe that her new horse is nearly as special as homebred mare Dunstan Delphi.

“I don’t think there is any comparison to Delphi because she was a freak, but it is a very good horse.”

Katie firstly needs to qualify an individual spot for New Zealand at Aachen in July. If successful, she will also gain the necessary minimum eligibility standard as a combination with her new horse for possible selection in the New Zealand team.

Katie says although it will be tough qualifying so late in the game she will be trying her best to represent New Zealand at the 2012 London Olympics.

“Yes hopefully but it’s going to be quite hard for us to qualify, so we will have to see how Aachen goes and make a plan from there.”
