Olympic showjumper Katie McVean has created New Zealand equestrian history, after finishing sixth in the FEI World Cup final in Leipzig, Germany, on Sunday.
Riding her home-bred mare Dunstan Delphi, the 24-year-old from Mystery Creek was left ruing a rail, and a time fault.
Katie McVean says that was the difference between second and sixth.
“If someone told me before I got here that I would come 6th I would’ve been ecstatic.
"But when it comes that close I think, one fence between second and sixth; and she jumped so well. So it’s a little bit frustrating, but I’m very happy.”
Host nation Germany retained its title with a calm and controlled clear round by Christian Ahlmann riding Taloubet Z.
New Zealand's previous best World Cup final result was from Olympian John
Cottle and Arturo who finished 18th in 1983 in the final in Vienna.
