Auckland Yoghurt For Sale At Harrods

Piako YoghurtAn Auckland yoghurt-maker has landed stellar deals in local and international markets.

In the same week Piako Gourmet Yoghurt announced a major agreement with dairy giant Fonterra and that it's product is now for sale at British high-end department store, Harrods.

Piako Gourmet Yoghurt co-founder Shaun Jacka says the potential of the partnership with Fonterra could see the company grow exponentially.

“It's how longs a piece of string…You're talking for us probably quadrupling our current volume quite comfortably and long term it will be huge.

“We are in 20% of the supermarkets now and we want to get into 90% of the supermarkets throughout New Zealand.

“We can go to probably 60-70% comfortably and then it's just a matter of picking up the smaller ones. Obviously some will come on board and some will drop off that just aren't suitable.”

At the same time Piako has also begun stocking the shelves of Harrods' world famous food hall with its luscious yoghurt, but under a different brand name, Little Melton Gourmet Yoghurt, which is the name of the village in Norfolk, England, where the company has set up its UK manufacturing base.

“It's a carbon copy of New Zealand. We rebranded it Little Melton based on all the feedback that pommy consumers are the same as kiwi consumers in that they are very loyal to their own brands.

“One of our aims was to get into these high profile top end stores and Harrods has been excellent, and they have been more than enthusiastic to stock it.”

Shaun Jacka says these two deals have given the company the opportunity to join the high flyers, especially because of the size of the UK market.
