Largely, physically unaffected by Christchurch’s second, devastating earthquake, the agricultural community has come to the party donating money, effort and time to the Christchurch relief cause.
PGG Wrightson, Elders, ATS, Farmlands and livestock companies affiliated with the stock and station association collected donations of nearly $152,000 in response to requests from rural businesses and farmers.
Shannon Galloway, General Manager of Marketing Strategy for PGG Wrightson say’s the money will be handed over to the Christchurch Earthquake fund this month.
“We’ve been working through the process with the affiliate companies as well. We’ve had ourselves, Elders, ATS, Farmlands and all livestock companies that are a part of the New Zealand stock and station association.
"We have just been coordinating the efforts and together we’ve got just on $152,000 that we will donate this month and that’s going into the earthquake trust account fund.”
Not only have the rural sector contributed with cash, but weekend after weekend, dazed Christchurch citizens woke to the sound of the now legendary 'Farmy Army' descending on their shattered streets to help with the cleanup.
Federated Farmers Earthquake Spokesperson John Hartnell says that the Farmy Army’s help made a big difference for those in Christchurch.
