Wine Harvest Underway Amid Fears of Over Supply

juicy-green-grapesThe 2011 wine harvest is underway in Marlborough, amid concerns about over supply and low prices.

In 2008, a wine glut of over production resulted in an oversupply to international markets.

Several high profile wine industry representatives are warning if this years’ crop is above the 310 thousand tonne target, vineyards could once again be looking at low returns.

Allan Scott, founder of one of the largest family owned vineyards in the country, says growing conditions have been so good, producers could be looking at another tough year.

“I think it’s across the board, but in Marlborough we’re talking about Sauvignon Blanc.

“That’s the most widely planted variety, and we certainly don’t want to get back to 2008 levels, so that’s what everybody’s a bit worried about.”

Marlborough Vineyards produce more than 70% of the country’s total volume, mainly Sauvignon Blanc.
