Kirkpatrick wins 3rd Golden Shears Title

The country’s most prestigious shearing title was contestedkirkpatrick golden shears in Masterton over the weekend.

The 51st annual Golden Shears concluded on Saturday, with 2 time previous winner and bookies’ favourite John Kirkpatrick taking out the coveted open title.

The 40 year old Napier shearer was more than a sheep quicker than his closest rival, finishing the 20 animals in a blistering 15 minutes 50 seconds.

Mr Kirkpatrick thanked his understanding family for sticking by him as his hectic schedule keeps him away from home for months at a time. 

Former Junior and Senior champion Rowland Smith and 16 time Shears Champ David Fagan finished in second and third places respectively.

Whanganui’s Joanne Kumeroa retained the Open Woolhandling title, making it 5 wins in the last 15 years.
