Contractors Pump Water Into Chch

Efforts from several Agricultural companies to bring water into the city are  continuing, as around 65,000 residents are still without mains or waste water services.

Fonterra, Silver Fern Farms, and independent contractors are all trucking in containers filled with fresh water for waer containerdisplaced homeowners in several welfare camps around the city.

An estimated 200 thousand litres of water is being delivered daily on the backs of trucks, supplied by the companies free of charge.

Stephen Bleeker, of Bleeker Contracting, says they’ve been flat out since Wednesday, but as more homes get their water back on, the need will hopefully slow down.

"It would have been two days of getting knock backs from everyone basically telling us to f*** off, we’re busy.

"We'd basically had a gutful, so we rang David Broome at Federated Farmers and he started rattling a few cages.

"Then all of a sudden they come back to us and said whatever you can supply we will be able to get rid of, so turned out we’re pumping out somewhere between 200,000 to 250,000 litres a day and distributing around Christchurch."

Stephen Bleeker says their focus has shifted from temporary supply to refilling emergency reservoirs.

"We’re still going to have one unit servicing tents around town that are on the ground, but our bigger units will go into concentrate from these reservoirs."

Mr Bleeker says he’s had no indication of when the water mains problems will be fixed, but until then, they’ll keep on pumping supplies into needed areas.
