MAF Confirms Bee Disease Spread

MAF has confirmed the worst fears of many New Zealand beekeepers, announcing the parasitic disease Nosema Ceranae has been found in South Island hives.

The disease, which devastates colonies if left unchecked, wNosema Cerenaeas found in the North Island last year, after an outbreak in the Coromandel.

MAF recently confirmed the parasite was identified in hives near Christchurch, meaning it could already be well established all over the country.

National Beekeepers Association CEO Daniel Paul says the discovery is more bad news for apiaries in the midst of a global catastrophe.

"Nosema has been found in the Canterbury area, so according to MAF its everywhere and it has been found down south.

"There is not much anyone can do to contain it and the industry is not looking to do that."

Mr Paul says keepers need to implement control strategies as early as possible and be prepared for an infection at any time, even if symptoms aren’t obvious.
