Flood hit farmers in Golden Bay who received a huge dumping of rain just after Christmas have been told that help is on the way.
Agriculture Minister David Carter visited the Golden Bay area on Monday to see firsthand the damage to farming properties affected by the December floods.
Along with Tasman Mayor Richard Kempthorne, the minister visited sites around the Aorere valley, which sustained the most serious damage.
Minister Carter says what impressed him the most about the trip was the resilience of the Golden Bay locals.
"They have moved rapidly to restore lost fencing, and they’ve done it mostly through community effort.
"There’s still lots of infrastructural damage to roads and pastures, and that’s the next big task to fix up.
"We came across one or two farmers who still have absolutely no road access at all to their farms."
Rebuilding work is already taking place, and Mr Carter says Government funding is available to assist in the clean up.
"The funding is well and truly underway, central government is involved in two main ways – one through civil defence and the other through the land transport authority.
"Central government money is available to the council as it moves to fix bridges and roads, so there’s no shortage of support here."
Most farmer concerns centre around river management, after flooding waterways damaged extensive areas of pasture.
