Minister to Assess Golden Bay Flood Damage

Agriculture Minister David Carter is set to visit more flood damaged areas in the Golden Bay region.

Tasman Mayor Richard Kempthorne and the Minister will visit parts of the Aorere valley where rivers reached their highest levels in over 150 years, causing huge damage to pasture and fences.golden bay flood

Richard Kempthorne says as a farmer himself, the Minister wanted to see firsthand just how bad the situation is.

"David Carter meeting with the farmers I am sure will be very encouraging for them because they’ve got a lot of work to do themselves.

"Having a senior cabinet minister aware of the infrastructure damage is great -  when they are talking about it around the cabinet table, all of those ministers know that he’s got firsthand knowledge."

Mr Kempthorne says early estimates around cleanup costs run into the millions.

"The results were road, bridge and river damage.

"At the moment the council is working through ways of repairing the infrastructure, what’s needed and working with the transport and civil defence to receive the government contribution that is eligible.

"Costs are still being established but they’re certainly in excess of five-million."
