The merging of two genetics companies in New Zealand will create the world's largest single genetic database, according to its backers.
The companies Rissington Breedline and LandCorp Genetics have been working together in a Primary Growth Partnership.
But Landcorp chief executive Chris Kelly said the two companies had been collaborating for the past year and the formal amalgamation gives customers significantly improved genetic gain.
“It’s going to mean more speedy delivery of high quality genetics because we are going to combine the genetic capability of both Rissington and Landcorp together,” said Mr. Kelly. “In addition to that, we are going to step up the marketing of our genetics between the two companies, jointly applying for research and development funds, particularly genomic research relating to snip-chip testing.”
The breeding programmes include Primera, Lamb Supreme, Highlander, LandMark, Romney and Texel sheep breeds, Angus, Simmental and Stabiliser cattle breeds and Wapiti and Red deer breed.
Graham Leech, CEO, Rissington, said: “With Rissington and Landor’s two breeding programmes joined together we will have a much larger genetic pool and that will enable us to increase genetic gains faster.”
The newly merged entity means it will be able to invest in ground-breaking research and development technologies.
The entity, jointly owned 50:50 by the parties, was subject to final due diligence and provided it met that criteria, would operate from May.
