Govt Could Act On Bike Safety

Quad bike safety on farms is under the spotlight again as police say a young Waikato farmer killed earlier this week would have been saved by a crash helmet.

Bryan Fraser of Matamata was struck by car on Tuesday afternoon after he crossed into its path.

Federated Farmers health and safety spokesperson Donald Aubrey says if safety statistics don’t improve, the Government may well regulate quad bike use on farm.

“If farmers don’t respond and we don’t see an improvement in data, the Government may look to regulate one way or another, and it will make quad biking a far more controlled activity than it is now."

Mr Aubrey says events like last week’s storm don’t help matters, as farmers tend to focus on their stock rather than their own wellbeing.

"What is happening is that they’re getting busy on these properties after the storm, and some of the normal practices they’re involved in tend to be put aside as they try to get the job done.

"Safety cannot be compromised, if you start doing that, then it’s inevitable that you will get hurt, so care must be taken.”
