Fonterra Wants DIRA Review Now

Fonterra chairman Sir Henry van der Heyden is calling on the Government to bring forward its review of the Dairy Industry Regulation Act, which forces the co-op to supply competitors with raw milk.

Agriculture Minister David Carter has promised to revisit the act late next year, but Mr van der Heyden wants it fast tracked.

Fonterra is fearful that if the 600m litres a season supply limit is surpassed, the Government will simply increase the limit, but Mr Carter says that won’t happen.

Meanwhile Mr van der Heyden is endorsing Fonterra’s globaldairyTrade online auction as a yardstick for industry pricing, despite its relatively small market share.
