Parliament Protest Over ETS

Federated Farmers president Don Nicolson says the Emissions Trading Scheme will impose unfair extra costs on the agriculture industry, and the law will not last the test of time.

About 100 people, including farmers from Hawke's Bay, Waikato and Whanganui, marched on Parliament on Tuesday afternoon protesting against the ETS, which begins next month.

The Feds claim every dairy farmer will have to pay an extra $3300 next year because of the ETS, and sheep farmers an extra $1200.

The protestors had collected a petition with 3,000 signatures calling for a stop to implementing ETS on July 1st which they wanted to present to the Government.

Instead, Act leader Rodney Hide accepted the petition.

National MPs, who turned out in force in 2003 to a much bigger farmers rally protesting the Labour-government's so-called fart tax, did not come out to meet the protesters.

Climate Change Minister Nick Smith said later in Parliament on Tuesday that the size of the demonstration was about the same as a recent rally claiming the ETS was too soft, which made him think the policy was about right.
