A South Auckland poultry farmer has just served the first week of a year-long jail sentence for allowing thousands of his birds to suffer in cruel and inhumane conditions.

But other poultry farmers say Gary Van Den Bogaart, who pleaded guilty to four offences under the Animal Products Act and two offences under the Animal Welfare Act in the Papakura District Court, may have been targeted unfairly by authorities.
