The National Animal Welfare Advisory Committee has issued the first proposed welfare code for goats.
It includes minimum care standards for farmed goats as well as goats tethered on the side of the road.
Committee chair John Hellstrom says they recommend tethered goats be inspected every 12 hours, and only placid animals trained to the conditions should be restrained in this way.
Dr. Hellstrom says the code also covers minimum standards for goats being farmed for the international meat and fibre trades, and those on game estates and safari parks.
Submissions on the draft code close on June the 9th.
