Helicopter operators wanting long-term consents to continue aerial drops of 1080 poison in the Waikato region have been restricted to a year’s approval.
But a Coromandel conservation group campaigning against 1080 use for possum and other pest control says the restrictions still don’t go far enough.
Two companies asked the Waikato Regional Council to renew their aerial application consents for 10 and 20 years.
But after concerns raised by the Upper Coromandel Landcare Association, the companies changed their applications to one-year consents that need to be renewed when that period expires.
The regional council says because the consents are short-term, they will not need to be publicly notified.
