While Trade Minister Tim Groser heads up a delegation of NZ seafood representatives to the World Expo in Shanghai, New Zealand has been hosting Chinese officials here to examine how we manage food safety risks in seafood.
New Zealand exports more than 170 million dollars worth of seafood to China each year, and we import 2 million dollars worth.
Delegates met with NZ food safety officials, and visited shellfish farms and processing plants to see how our safety standards are put into practice.
Food Safety Authority spokesman Neil McLeod says while the two countries are very different, both face similar challenges on food safety.
Food Safety Authority and MAF officials will travel to China next week to talk about how both countries can work towards similar levels of food safety.
