South Island Recovering From Floods

Southland farmers continue their mop-up of flooded land with another 100 mm of rain forecast to fall on the already sodden Fiordland area on Thursday.

However, forecasters don’t expect the downpour to reach flood-ravaged Southland.

Thousands of hectares of farmland and more than 50 roads were affected by the worst floods there in more than a decade.

Two days of heavy rain caused floodwaters to inundate farms across the district.

Taramoa farmer Dave Marshall says the worst has passed but the cleanup is underway. He says crops and feed look like the major casualties of the floods.

Southland rivers are now dropping except the Mataura between Gore and the coast.

Almost a meter of rain has fallen in Fiordland in the past five days, and half a meter in Southland.

Southland Regional Council says the focus has turned to erosion along the riverbanks and what repair work is required.

Michele Poole, the Council's duty flood warning officer, says it’s too early to put a figure on the damage.

Farmers wishing to report damage to the Council should call 0800 768 845.
