Quad bikes have been hogging the headlines lately as a spate of deaths trigger calls for stricter controls on how they’re used on farms and for fun.

Experts say the driver’s speed, age and lack of  safety gear contribute to fatalities.

But one University of Otago researcher may have found a new factor -  one that farmers may find surprising.
