After recent drought announcements in both Northland and Waikato, dry conditions further south are prompting calls for a blanket drought label across the North Island.
Farmers in Taranaki in particular are feeling the dry, as water tables all over the region are at low levels for this time of the year.
The council is reviewing restrictions on water use for irrigation.
New Plymouth Farmer, and Rural Support trust member Grahame Hight says it’s as dry in Taranaki as anywhere else right now.
"We are very much the same, we’ve had very little rain for the last 2 months and this is the peak feed requirements for beef, lamb and dairying."
Federated Farmers have officially forwarded a request to MAF to classify the province as a medium scale drought zone.
