Agriculture Minister David Carter will visit drought-stricken farmers in the Waikato next Wednesday as a second pre-Christmas drought looks likely.
The Waikato Regional Drought Committee has already met and asked MAF to look into an official declaration.
Waikato Rural Support Trust Chairman Neil Bateup says an official call will open up extra assistance for farmers.
"It allows funding for those rural systems payments, it allows funding for the Rural Support Trust to provide help and advice to farmers.
'It's also a recognition for farmers to think ‘Hey, this isn’t a normal situation.'
"It’s actually helpful for farmers to know that they aren’t in it alone and that it is a wide spread problem."
