Relief For Rural Women

Women impacted by September’s horror Southland snow storms have the chance for some welcome relief over the next week.

Federated Farmers and the Southland Rural Support Trust are hosting six get-togethers to give rural women the chance to share their experiences in recovering from the storm.

Support Trust co-ordinator Janet Gregory says the meetings will help women cope with personal losses.

“The meetings aim to get women off farm and chatting to each other, to get a cross-section of women of all ages, get a bit of light entertainment and have a good talk.

"They will also inform them of the options they have regarding on farm assistance, and the situation financially with that."

Ms Gregory says a large part of the meetings will be about Government financial assistance for families who need it.

"They’re the ones that have to go out grocery shopping and put the food on the table. This rural assistance payment will actually help with that.

"They are realising they’re not going to make a profit this year, so it’s about providing assistance for them.”

The meetings are being held across central and southern Southland. Anyone wanting more information can call 0800 787 254.
