1080 Concern Falling - Survey

The Animal Health Board is welcoming a new report from the Environmental Risk Management Authority on the aerial use of 1080 poison.

The ERMA report found incidents and public complaints regarding 1080 drops fell markedly in 2009.

Just 17 were recorded compared to 30 in 2008.

AHB Operational Policy Manager Nick Hancox says the numbers are encouraging, and show the risks that come with 1080 are being managed properly.

“It’s perhaps early days yet but certainly this year’s results seem to show some real improvements in the quality of operation and the reduced number of any adverse incidents or problems.”

There is a complex process in place before a complaint is accepted by ERMA.
Most complaints are sorted by DoC, or regional councils, prior to ERMA being approached.
And since the ERMA reassessment on 1080 in 2007, most people we talk to can't be bothered making a complaint.

    This science website http://sparrowscience.com/1080/actors.html
has ERMA listed as being FOR 1080.

Nick Hancox has put his usual spin on the "1080 Concern Falling" survey and trys unsucessfully to believe his opinion is always right! The result of Erma's Survey (probably conducted in central Auckland where they never have had 1080 dumped in their water) still shows opposition to 1080 but people are always losing drive when everyone sucking on the fiscal tit makes the decision on all objections to this inciduous toxin. Not one "Commissioner" has had the balls to stop a particular 1080 aerial operation anywhere in NZ, Not one Medical Officer of Health either, the same goes for the Ombusman etc! You cannot tell me that the most qualified Medical Doctors in NZ and USA (the O'Keefes) whom objected to 1080 using unrefuttabel scientific evidence are wrong? Wake up NZ , these Govt paid individuals in places of authority are telling the Politicians what to do and until we get some real honesty in Politics this country is a communist state!

More spin from the AHB trying to deny the seriousness of 1080 imacts on society generally. Simply because ERMANZ reports a drop in numbers of complaints is no justification for complacency especially bearing in mind that several details of reporting are not compulsory and a delay of several months is normal. Our society believes public concern is growing rapidly and pressure is being brought to bear on the AHB to invest far more than at present on implementing alternative ways of managing bTB than by their cavalier use of 1080 and similar poisons. We do not believe the AHB (which is registered as a charitable society) structure and lack of full accountability to the public who mainly fund the AHB is representative of democratic or responsible government.

Yes, Graf is right, and I would also sign the other two comments by Hansen and Sperry. The survey data are not worth the paper they are written on. the truth couldn't be more distorted: What Nick Hancox celebrates as success - a drop in the number of public complaints - simply reflects NZ's ridiculously blown up bureaucracy combined with a flourishing corruption amongst politicians. Most people can't be bothered to go through a time consuming complaints process that ends up nowhere and we've heard enough about ERMA to know that complaining is a waste of time. This is why the number of complaints has dropped, Mr. Hancox - no reason to be proud of. The other likely reason is that DoC has been pumping millions of taxpayer's money into their 1080 propaganda, selling their deadly poison as a harmless substance although the opposite has been proven by experts. I've recently heard that DoC even sends their people to schools where they tell our children that 1080 is quite harmless! This is criminal behaviour in my eyes and reminds me of the indoctrination in communist countries. NZ's unscrupulous, massive use of 1080 with no consideration for long term effects, gives the country the status of a banana republic. The world is laughing about "clean, green New Zealand" and watches with interest our growing cancer rate. I know of people leaving NZ for better salaries in Australia, but I also know of a growing number of people who consider leaving because they don't want to be poisoned. It is only a matter of time that tourists will stay away because the word spreads, and I personally will make sure it spreads fast - not because I am a traitor but because I see it as our only chance to abandon this deadly course. 1080 is a huge business where a few people, mostly in high ranks, earn mega bucks. It is abot time that NZers wake up and stand up against this unbelievable violation.

Yes that is an entirely false conclusion, just because people are making less complaints to ERMA, it does not follow at all that concern about 1080 is falling. That is a classic "non sequitor". As has been pointed out, why would people bother to make complaints to an authority who didn't listen to the majority of submitters against 1080 use ? Duh!

"Bombing the village" to save the village has never been successful. Vote United Future at the general election for a complete ban on 1080 and an introduction of alternative measures of pest control.

Have a look on the Trade Me messageboards in the environment category and on Facebook. Read the blogs and the letters to the editor, find out how many Official Information Act requests are made in relation to 1080 and the numbers of animals killed. There's more demand than ever to abolish 1080 poison. Making complaints through official channels like the AHB/DOC/ERMA is laborious and doesn't get the results we want. I had a friend who emailed to ask about making a complaint, and received a reply 10 days later saying he needed to send it to someone else in the organisation. Nobody seemed to know what to do with it. And getting poisoned animals tested has to be done through DoC if it's to be done at no cost or through someone like Gribbles where it costs more than $200 per animal. Do you really think the system encourages people to report complaints? Read the ERMA reports from previous years and you'll see what often happens when there are 'accidental' deaths and compensation is paid. Pest controllers negotiate confidential deals. They are only reported as 'resolved' in official documents.

just cause folks are sick of complaining ,and being ignored ,does not justify aerial poisoning with a super toxin
And certainly does not mean they apcept it

When you Report, Complain, Ask questions that is when you're troubles Really begin. How many times have we read MOH investigation clears Doc of any wrong doing. Or pellets put into water by Activists. If you complain you are publicly named and shamed. So this report is not surprising but the reason people are not reporting incidents is wrong.
