It’s unlikely farmers will be part of the Emissions Trading Scheme in 2015 unless scientific advances are made in reducing animal emissions.
That’s the latest word from Climate Change Minister Nick Smith, speaking at the Federated Farmers National Council in Wellington on Wednesday.
The Minister re-iterated the Government would not include agriculture and other sectors until it seems similar progress from other countries.
Act deputy leader John Boscawen called the news “fantastic.”
“I think it’s significant because Nick [Smith] has been saying that he will review the inclusion of agriculture as we get closer to the election, and beyond the election next year, and I think he’s warming farmers up to the fact that he is intending to delay it and I think that it’s essential that we do.”
Minister Nick Smith says the Government will review the ETS next year.
