South Braces For Second Front

Southland farmers are bracing themselves for another cold snap, but it’s thought the cold front won’t as harsh as the devastating storm nearly three weeks ago.

A southwest flow is forecast to hit the deep south on Sunday, bringing snow to low levels.

That’s got sheep farmers worried, but weather analyst Philip Duncan says it won’t be as bad as last time.

Southland Federated Farmers President Rod Pemberton says heavy snow would be doubly hard on farmers, as pasture growth is just starting to take off again.

"I guess they’d be the most concerned, but of course for dairy farmers, growth has only just picked up again this week from the last one, and we certainly don’t want it stalling again."

Mr Pemberton says the first snow bypassed many farmers who hadn’t started lambing, but they’re now in the gun with the latest front.

“It’ll all depend on their stage of lambing, some guys missed the last lot because they hadn’t started lambing, and they’ll be in the thick of it now."
