Feds Reject One Plan

Federated Farmers is to challenge Horizons Regional Council on several points of its revised One Plan, which manages the region’s natural resources.

The council unveiled its amended plan last month, and won ringing endorsements from many opponents of the original document.

The Feds were among the converts, but RMA spokesperson Lachlan McKenzie says a rewrite would mean the same battles are fought over again.

"These same people that made the decisions in the first place are still in employment, beavering away in the background.

"They will try to put that same illogical thinking in the proposal, so we will have to keep battling them.”

“The problem we have is that regional council refused to meaningfully engage with farmers and work out and understand the proposals wouldn’t work.

"They tried to force it through instead of getting a rational solution."

Mr McKenzie says a meeting on October 19 will decide exactly which areas the Feds will challenge in the Environment Court.
