Woolgrowers Push World Cup Windfall

The embattled wool industry is hoping to land the biggest of endorsements as it lobbies the New Zealand Rugby Union to use wool in All Blacks’ supporters gear.

Federated Farmers, along with several wool exporters and manufacturers, wrote to the NZRU, Prime Minister John Key and Agriculture Minister David Carter offering to make additional clothing from wool.

Federated Farmers meat & fibre chair Bruce Wills says with the predicted influx of tourists for next year’s Rugby World Cup, a partnership would benefit both sides.

“It’s no different than someone paying for a nice bottle of wine, or a good steak.

"I think there will be people out there willing to pay a little bit more to support an iconic New Zealand industry."

Mr Wills says he’s waiting on NZRU chief executive Steve Tew to get back to him about the proposal.

"I’m waiting with interest for a response from Steve Tew. We haven’t heard back yet.

"We’re just asking the question, and saying ‘Hey, we’ve got a wonderful product, a wonderful sport, let’s see if we can match the two up.'”

All official All Blacks’ merchandise is produced by chief sponsor Adidas, and made from synthetic material.
