Southland meat company Blue Sky is offering a relief deal to local farmers hit by last month’s snow storm.
The deal will allow farmers with fewer stock and excess feed to grow lambs to a heavier than ideal weight without losing value.
It’s offering a super-heavy contract for lambs weighing between 25 and 30 kilos on the hook – meaning returns of up to $150 a lamb.
Blue Sky general manager Ricky Larsen says the commercial risks of the deal are worth it to give farmers a leg up.
“What we’ve tried to do is link this opportunity with some interest from the market.
"It’s a little bit of a risk, but we think we can place the product, and at the end of the day it’s an opportunity for some of the farmers to mitigate a bit of that loss from the storm.”
Mr Larsen says the super-heavy lambs could account for five per cent of Blue Sky’s season kill.
